It seems like I'm always talking about how I wish there was a version of neocities that had fewer children. Then I think it through and realize that's like saying, "I wish there was a version of Nickelodeon that had fewer children." It doesn't really make sense. The early years of neocities where it was all nerds from HN was always going to be temporary.
Meanwhile there are small web services that are intrinsically more appealing to adults where we could be connecting with others. Bear blog reminds me of a stripped down, non-corporate, FOSS inspired LiveJournal for the 2020s.
I've only just started messing around with it but here's some links:
Main Site: https://bearblog.dev/
Discover Blogs: https://bearblog.dev/discover/
I started one, although there's nothing there yet except bad omens. https://nobo.bearblog.dev/
I'm going to try to update this thread with links to interesting bear blog posts so feel free to do that if you want.

Interesting not because we haven't seen articles suggesting we cut off our digital vices before, but because "doing superficial work" is included as one of these vices.
Guess I never thought about it that way.

It's telling about the users of the service when that post got 25 updoots

while this one gets 45 updoots

one of those blogs is much older with many more posts on it so...
but still... i will eat my shoe if there is even one conservative writer on that discover feed

I'll keep my eyes peeled.
You could always be the first.

Back your posts up regularly though.
I think about starting up a blog from time to time. Though I don't know if Bear Blog would be a good option. It seems too stripped-down and simplistic. It's kind of cool that it's Markdown-based, but that's also limited for more creative blogging

I like to have a mix of markdown and custom HTML. So the basic functionality is simple but it still supports adding whatever I need, including additiuonal style, script, and markup. I'm not sure if bear blog supports that or not. I probably wouldn't use bearblog unless it was for discoverability. Or maybe if you have no interest in coding.

Even then, I don't think it supports embeds which a lot of people like to incorporate in their writing

I use a static site generator for my blog and it allows for as much customization as you could want but... it sometimes feels like no one reads it. That kind of thing is what makes me consider blogging communities.
maybe something like blogspot would be better, idk. might just be wishful thinking.
I tried doing a bearblog. This is a more revealing type of post than I would normally do on goeshard.
https://nobo.bearblog.dev/politics/
This is where I reveal to everyone who maybe didn't know that I'm not conservative -- I'm center-left.
If anyone really thought I was conservative, it's only because I usually don't talk politics and I can usually get along with most people I disagree with. It's strange alliance between people like me and you conservatives isn't it?
Upvote my post if you want :P
I'm probably going to write here from now on instead of goeshard.org

at least for now

> Something I take away from the old blog is: Don't take yourself too seriously (and don't expect anyone to collaborate with you).
At least don't expect random strangers to collaborate without some guidance, I guess. If you have a project and want collaboration, you can probably get something going with some individuals you meet online, though it can be hard to retain them if they're not aligned I guess
But for the board, I think it really comes down to advertisement, and reminding people that it's here. Also I think the registration is broken or something since it never sends emails to people, so the lack of feedback isn't helping in either direction

I've worked with a few peole on the old goeshard blog.

A few of my IRL friends have done a random post just from me pestering them to do it. There's also an article here with guidelines about doing it: https://goeshard.org/2025/05/07/do-you-want-to-guest-post-an-article-for-goeshardorg/
I feel like I've shilled this to the point that it's embarassing to continue shilling it. Treating goeshard.org like a magazine with a bunch of writers is an unrealistic way to approach it. It's simply never going to happen, so I'm not really doing it anymore.
> But for the board, I think it really comes down to advertisement, and reminding people that it's here.
Yeah... I'm probably not going to do that. I've done nothing but shill this website to people who I think are cool for months and months, and I'm ready to shed the image of "guy who shills his website constantly." I could do monetary ads, right... but what kind of culture would that bring really? It would be paying to spend my time getting spammed by low effort posts. Sometimes dead is better.
> Also I think the registration is broken or something since it never sends emails to people, so the lack of feedback isn't helping in either direction
Have you checked your spam? Do you want to make a /meta/ post reporting this problem with more specific issues? Other people have made accounts without problems so more information would be good. What is the account name you registered?
I don't have any recent account regs. The last one was 9/5 and they successfully logged in.
I would try it again. Post in /meta/ if you can't get it to work.
